The Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary in the town of Bansko was constructed in 1774, several remakings of the construction were performed subsequently. The building is half underground, with one apse and a two pitched roof. It is famous for the unique woodcarving of its iconostasis – called ‘Bansko iconostasis’ and its bishop’s throne. The original icons were painted by Toma Vishanov (Molera) – founder of Bansko Art School. Following a fire in 1958, they were replaced by replicas.
